DAY 7 – IGOUMENITSA, GREECE

An undiscovered gem on the northwest coast of Greece, Igoumenitsa stands on the site of a settlement dating to the 4th century BC, and several ancient sites are located nearby. Founded in 31 BC, the archaeological site Nikopolis was once a thriving capital built by the Roman emperor Octavian to commemorate his victory over Anthony and Cleopatra. You can also visit Meteora with its spectacular 15th century monasteries built into seemingly inaccessible sandstone peaks.

DAY 8 – BAR, MONTENEGRO

Stroll down Bar’s palm-lined waterfront promenade past King?Nikola’s Palace, now a charming regional museum showcasing scenic gardens, then venture to the Old Town of Stari Bar perched on the hillside. The town manifests centuries of history in Byzantine fortifications, a remarkable Ottoman aqueduct and a clocktower that stands as a symbol of the city. Nearby is Bar’s most famous resident, a 2,000-year-old olive tree believed to be the oldest in Europe. Just outside of Bar, spanning the border of Montenegro and Albania, Lake Skadar offers boating and kayaking expeditions as well as tastings at local wineries.
