Our Product Manager, Michaela and Marketing Manager, Blake, had the exciting opportunity to experience Aurora Expeditions’ brand new ship, the Douglas Mawson, before it set off on its maiden voyage. It was an incredible opportunity to walk through the vessel, meet the team, and get a genuine feel for what future guests will enjoy as she begins her first season. Keep reading to find out more about this brand new ship.
A First Glimpse
Named in honour of the Australian explorer Sir Douglas Mawson, the ship represents Aurora Expeditions’ next generation of purpose-built vessels. She has a Polar Class 6 rating along with advanced environmental and safety systems. The Douglas Mawson uses a fuel-efficient diesel electric propulsion system, a waste heat recovery system and the Ulstein X BOW design. This technology reduces fuel consumption, noise and motion in rough seas while also minimising environmental impact.
With a capacity for around 100 to 130 passengers, the experience will feel intimate and allows every guest the chance to participate fully in the expedition activities.

Aurora Expeditions Dining and Onboard Atmosphere
Our visit began with lunch in the main dining room which can seat all passengers in a warm and intimate setting. This is one of two dining venues onboard, giving guests options on where to eat.
Lunch was a real highlight. We enjoyed an Amuse Bouche which was a lightly fried mussel with mint aioli, followed by a watermelon salad with goat’s curd. For our main course, we were served lamb loin with native pepper berry jus. The food was beautiful and the staff created a wonderful atmosphere that set the standard for what passengers can expect.

On Aurora Expedition ships, house wine and beer are included with dinner and during special events like the Captain’s Welcome and the Farewell Drinks. Soft drinks, tea, coffee and snacks are included and available around the clock.

There are two stylish bars onboard with comfortable seating, along with several inviting communal spaces including a library, a lecture theatre and a Citizen Science Centre. These venues will host educational lectures and are designed so guests can easily enjoy views of wildlife and landscapes through large panoramic windows or step straight outside when something exciting appears.

Outdoor Spaces and Relaxation
The top decks and pool deck are designed with the same focus on views and outdoor comfort. There are generous seating areas for scenery watching and elevated pools and hot tubs that overlook the passing landscapes. These give guests the chance to relax in the water while enjoying some of the best views on the ship.

The pool deck bar is fully sheltered, which is a great addition and different to the other Aurora ships in the fleet. This extra protection from the sun and weather will be appreciated during long days outside.
The gym is fitted with brand new equipment, including treadmills, bikes and weight machines, all facing large windows. Every guest receives their own yoga mat to use during the voyage. The leisure area also features a very large dry sauna, which can likely fit more than thirty people. After a time out in the cold, this is sure to be a popular spot.

Aurora Expeditions Staterooms and Suites
There are several room categories on the Aurora Expeditions Douglas Mawson and all have a modern and elegant design. Blue and white tones are combined with dark timber finishes and subtle nautical elements. Throughout the ship and in the staterooms, you will find stunning photography of polar landscapes, wildlife and icy oceans which adds a beautiful connection to the destinations the ship visits.
Balcony Staterooms
Balcony staterooms feature a king bed, a wardrobe, a small seating area and a private balcony. There is also a minibar with drinks available at an additional cost. The bathrooms include a glass shower screen, vanity and toilet. A neat and tidy space that looks very comfortable.

Suites
The larger suites are ideal for guests who want more space. These include a separate living room, a double sized balcony, a walk in wardrobe and a larger bathroom with a double vanity.

Solo Cabins
The Douglas Mawson includes more solo cabins than ever before, which is fantastic for independent travellers who do not want to pay for a double room. These cabins are compact but very functional and include a single bed, porthole window, small desk area and a television. The vanity is located in the main cabin and the toilet and shower are enclosed together in a wet area style bathroom.

Expedition and Adventure Facilities
One of the most impressive areas onboard is the Mud Room. It is very spacious with individual lockers for all guests. On embarkation, guests are fitted with boots and expedition equipment, including a complimentary polar expedition jacket that guests can keep and take home with them. All of their polar clothing and equipment can be stored in this area. There is plenty of seating, hooks, hair dryers and room to get prepared for daily adventures.

Next to the Mud Room are the activity spaces which hold dry suits, hiking poles, life vests, kayaks and an incredible fifteen Zodiacs. This means there is enough equipment for all guests to explore at the same time without waiting. This Aurora Expeditions ship also carries twenty-three expedition staff who are passionate about guiding guests and creating unforgettable experiences.

Looking Ahead and Upcoming Itineraries
The Douglas Mawson is ready to begin its inaugural season. After her naming ceremony in Sydney Harbour, the ship will head to Tasmania, where it will welcome its first guests before setting course for Antarctica and Mawson’s Hut. The Douglas Mawson will also be venturing to the Arctic and small ship cruising.
Aurora Expeditions has also released its 2027 and 2028 itineraries, which include the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia, Falklands Malvinas and Patagonia. Voyages range from eight to twenty-three days.
